this is such a sweet poem. My funny dad memory is getting stomach flu at 8 and he cordoned off a room for me to watch cartoons and endure it for a week or two. I had stopped my vomiting spell for a whole day so he decided to give me purple kool-aid as a pick-me-up. I vomited it up 30 minutes later into a bucket, all liquid, and he found it a bit funny how purple it was.

Oh my, this is a gorgeous poem. Thank you so much for sharing this on Father's Day. I thought I could alchemize the pain of the difficult relationship I had with my father by conjuring up the most amazing daddy for any children I may have. He came into my life later than I expected (at 40!) but he was here, of that I am sure. I thought my dream was over when he died almost 3 years ago, but the foundation he built for our son will last forever. My father died exactly 4 months after my husband, but I was too numb to mourn him. He was 86, and he lived a good life, he always told me that anyway. I appreciate you sharing your recipe so generously. It's the gift we can give to ourselves and our children. XO Amy 🥰🙏

Kind of perfect. Thanks for sharing it. As a father myself I hope it can be true that it doesn't always require this recipe:

The secret to cooking up

A loving father is it

Starts with his father

His mother...

In other words I hope that those whose parents weren't giving of all the care and love they could be can also learn to be caring and loving despite what might have happened to them in their childhood. So your recipe could be called the "oven-ready" one, but there are other ingredients that can be mixed out there, even from broken lives.

(In my country we have a different father's day BTW)

This is true! This poem is specific to my husband as his dad and mom are the best! Sometimes being shown the kind of parent you don’t want to be also helps shape the parent you are. Thank you for reading.
